Polysolar Delivers Rochdale’s First Solar Carport

Polysolar is pleased to announce the successful installation and commissioning of a new solar carport canopy at Heywood Sports Village, a leisure centre in Rochdale. This is the first solar carport canopy in the area, providing both renewable energy and practical benefits for the local community.

The project includes:

  • A 63 kW system
  • 150 solar panels, each rated at 415 W
  • Delivery on budget and full commissioning
  • Design that reduces the leisure centre’s reliance on the grid and includes additional ducting to support future electric vehicle charging stations

The local council was highly satisfied with the outcome and has already invited Polysolar to expand the initiative and participate in a Greater Manchester Combined Authority tender.

Solar carports provide dual benefits by generating renewable energy while serving practical functions:

  • Covered parking protects vehicles from rain and keeps them cooler in summer, reducing the need for in-car cooling
  • Motion-sensor and lumen-sensor controlled lighting improves safety and energy efficiency by adjusting automatically to movement and daylight
  • Optimised land use allows the space beneath the carport to remain functional, unlike traditional ground-mounted solar installations

Polysolar has delivered similar projects across the United Kingdom including Tewkesbury, Stowmarket and Sudbury, building strong relationships with local councils and delivering tangible benefits for communities.

Since completion, the carport at Heywood Sports Village has quickly become a popular parking area for residents and visitors, demonstrating how renewable infrastructure can integrate seamlessly into everyday life.

This project highlights the type of scalable and practical renewable energy solutions made possible through strategic investment and commitment to sustainable innovation.
